How to Testify in Court:  3 Rules Every Witness Should Know

Being called to testify in court can feel intimidating. Whether you are a witness or involved in a case, understanding how to answer questions clearly and confidently can make a significant difference in how your testimony is received.

Trial lawyers often give witnesses three simple guidelines to follow when taking the stand.

1. Tell the Truth

This may sound obvious, but telling the truth starts with understanding exactly what you are being asked. Your responsibility as a witness is to provide honest and accurate answers.

2. Listen Carefully to the Question

Before answering, take a moment to make sure you understand the question. If something is unclear, ask the lawyer or the judge for clarification. You cannot give a truthful answer if you do not fully understand the question being asked.

3. Stay Calm and Answer Only the Question Asked

Do not try to anticipate where the lawyer is going with the question. Take a breath, stay composed, and focus only on the specific question in front of you. Answer that question clearly and avoid volunteering extra information that was not requested.

Following these three rules can help you provide clear testimony and present yourself confidently as a witness in court.
