Courtroom Etiquette: 5 Rules to Make the Right Impression

Going to court is not just about what you say — it is also about how you present yourself. Judges pay close attention to behaviour, appearance, and respect for the courtroom process.

There are five simple courtroom etiquette rules that can help you make the best possible impression.

1. Dress for Success
Dress neatly and professionally. You do not need to be overly formal, but you should wear something respectful and appropriate. Choose clothing that is clean, conservative, and comfortable.

2. Do Not Wear a Hat
Hats are not permitted in the courtroom. You will be asked to remove it, often before you even enter the courtroom. It is best to leave it behind.

3. Turn Off Your Cell Phone
Your phone should be completely turned off before entering the courtroom. If you are not a lawyer, you are generally not permitted to have your phone on. Lawyers may have phones on silent, but for everyone else, off means off.

4. Do Not Speak Out of Turn
In court, your lawyer speaks on your behalf. Do not interrupt, speak over others, or try to respond unless you are asked to do so. Wait for your turn and follow the direction of your lawyer and the judge.

5. Control Your Body Language
Your behaviour matters. Avoid rolling your eyes, reacting to testimony, or showing frustration. Even small gestures can be noticed and may be seen as disrespectful or disruptive.

These rules also apply to anyone you bring with you to court. Their behaviour reflects on you.

Following these five courtroom etiquette rules helps show respect for the process and can positively influence how you are perceived by the judge.
